Yes, you read the title right. I've told this story a few times already and keep getting asked "Why haven't you blogged that??" so here goes.......
This past week I was fortunate enough to turn 40 years old. Not something I really want to brag about but all in all it's not so bad. As you get older, have a family, open a busy, and are just generally busy as all get out, birthdays become another day in the life. This year was no different. We attempted to set up a party the weekend before my birthday, but my son was in a swim meet up in Seattle so that wouldn't work. I kind of forgot about the whole party thing when I realized how busy we really were. Apparently my husband and son had other ideas. My birthday was on a Tuesday. My 40th of all birthdays. My husband informs me he has to take a quick trip for work (he's kidding, right???) ummm, nope. He was actually scheduled to fly out at 4am ON my birthday. Bummer deal. I decided to just deal with it, can't really change it so why get upspet right? Next, I get an email request for a custom birthday cake for the store. Carly would like a 3 tiered, beautiful cake (she sent me a picture) for the 26th of January for a party of approximately 20 people. So we go back and forth in emails for a few days discussing the details of the event, the cost of the cake, the design and such. I emailed her the cake contract becuase she was flying out of town to Chicago for work for the week. The cost of the cake will be $200 - it's 3 tiers, fondant, roses, and will feed WAY more than 20 people. Carly tells me "no problem, we very well may have more than 20 people at the party, my friend is liked by lots of people" Ok, so we book it for the 26th.
Now comes the funny stuff. My husband and oldest son come home one night and kind of hang out in the front room together for a few. I hear from my husband "so, should we tell her?" to which my son says "Nope, don't wanna" and heads the other direction in the house. Ok, what gives? The mom radar is up for sure! A few minutes goes by, "I really don't think we should tell her" says my son. SPILL IT!!! is my response. I'm prepared for the worst, only to hear "we've been trying for 2 weeks to plan a surprise party for you and it's just not working out" Really? Is that all? Awwww. I told them they got credit for trying. The week of Seattle swim meet, husband being gone (ON my actual birthday) and then realizing the weekend of the 26th is yet another swim meet and one which our club is the hosting club. That in itself means a seriously long weekend! So I let them off the hook. After I did that, my husband says, with a smile on his face "you need to move Carly Shepard's cake order from the 26th" Wait, what????? Now, my son is RUNNING the other way! Yep, my 14 year old SON created Carly, found this cake, emailed SweetStory about booking it, went through all the contract stuff, booked the party and it was a cake for ME!!! My husband was laughing hysterically at this point and my son is trying really hard not to laugh and blaming his dad for starting the whole thing to begin with. Yep, I have to bake my own cake! I love my family and love how creative they are. Kinda scary that they can sidestep mom without her cluing in!
Enjoy the chuckle!

Our last Storytime of the year was themed Christmas and we even had a surprise visitor!
We had a wonderful ending to our 2012 Storytime series with Miss Angela. She read Christmas themed stories and the kids received a Christmas themed cookie and a gingerbread house to decorate. As we began to wind down, you could hear the jingle of bells outside the store. The kids were excited to see Gambler! He's a lovable, gentle, 22 yr old pony who made a surprise visit to wrap up the morning. What a sweet and wonderful treat for the kids!
We're looking forward to having Mrs. Storytime Angela back in 2013, she sure makes Storytime at SweetStory extra sweet and special. Special thanks to Moya from Copper Creek Mercantile Sherwood Feed Store for bringing our surprise visitor, Gambler! What a sweet treat he was.
